Learn About Aviation and Space Endeavors In Lone Tree

Not far from Retreat at Park Meadows is a fascinating museum that inspires and educates people of all ages about aviation and space endeavors of the past, present, and future. It’s known as the Wings Over the Rockies Air & Space Museum, and it’s located on the grounds of the former Lowry Air Force Base. Housed in Hangar 1, the museum spans more than 180,000 square feet and its collection includes fifty iconic aircraft dating from 1939 to 1990. Things to see and do include:

Colorado’s Astronauts – The “Colorado’s Astronauts” exhibit gives visitors an in-depth look at some of the men and women who helped put the state on the leading edge of space exploration and study.

MaxFlight Simulator – Choose a plane and enjoy five minutes of action in the MaxFlight Simulator. As the pilot, you will experience take-off, aerobatic maneuvers, and landing. The simulator also features ten different roller coasters ranging from tame to intense.

F-100 Super Sabre – Used by both the United States Air Force and Air National Guard from 1954-1979, this plane was deployed as a fighter-bomber during the Vietnam War. According to the museum, it was the first U.S. Air Force fighter to achieve supersonic speed in level flight.

B-52 Stratofortress – This combat aircraft has seen one of the largest service careers as it experienced conflicts ranging from the Cold War to the Gulf War. The model on display was used as a trainer at Lowry Air Force Base.
